Where magic lies

We know magic as something you believe in as a child. Perhaps you lose it on your way to growing up. Maybe it becomes buried in the paperwork and mundane admin you have to do. Maybe it gets stolen from you when you’re bullied at school. Maybe it’s something you lose, but find again, in a lover or a friend. Maybe I’m one of the lucky ones that never lost it, or the stubborn one that held on too tight. Maybe I experienced how much you need it when the world’s heaviness comes down on you like a weight you’re forced to carry. Either way, I believe in the magic of this Earth. If you know where to look, you’ll see it everywhere you go. If you keep your head down, you’ll miss it all. That would be a tragic loss.
Here’s a poem I wrote when I was reflecting on one year in Australia.

We arrived in the land down under,
With pure excitement and waves of wonder.
We surfed through roads in our home on wheels,
Weaving in and out,
Land and sea,
Sand and trees.
A whirlwind of places and people,
We never expected to meet.
Let’s not forget why we came:
To live a life
Free from the rain,
Where the sun shines bright and new,
And the dazzling moon
Lights the sparkling sea.
Wonder, excitement, and awe—
It really is as blue as they say,
With magic in the sky,
Magic in the sea.
But what I also found
Was magic in me,
In the lives we lead,
The people we meet.
