Let me tell you the story of the epic debut of the disco bag. The disco bag is one of my recently acquired bag covers from Osto.mefashion and I do not regret this purchase one tiny bit. I’m going to tell you how I styled this bag cover with my handmade outfit for a burning man themed party.
The event
While we’re here in Mollymook, we’ve been working at a small coastal hotel chain consisting of two hotels here, and one further up the coast. The owner of this business recently sold for a whopping 100 million Aussie dollars. At the ripe age of 70 something, he decided to throw a huge shindig as a final hurrah and thank you to all his staff. Yes, this included me and Ben.
Theme: Burning man
Upon receiving the RSVP, we learned the theme was ‘Burning Man’. If you know, you know. If you don’t (like I didn’t), then to briefly describe it, “once a year, tens of thousands of art makers and lovers attend Burning Man in the desert of Nevada. A temporary metropolis, inducing awe, inspiration and wonderment, aimed to bring together the collective and unite in a world of their own creation”.
The RSVP also included a full 2 day itinerary, beginning at 2:30pm going on until 9am two days later, with time allocated for performances, DJs, dinner and canopies. Yes, this event was going to be a big one. Not only that, but the promise of no costume, no entry and even prizes for the best dressed. This was one we had to put in the effort for.
I began to look for inspiration and found it in an $80 macrame skirt, reminiscent of pool party/coachella. Instead of forking out $80, I bought two packs of black macrame thread instead and went about making the skirt for myself.
After two afternoons I had the skirt I found from my inspiration, and put together a neck piece with the spare thread. Outfit complete, but of course, you could see my grey stoma bag through the macrame skirt. I had the perfect solution.
Thank you Osto.mefashion
Osto.mefashion is a fashion brand that makes stoma bag covers I’ve been following on instagram for awhile. With different collections on their site it’s clear why they’re successful. Each design is sleek, somehow making a stoma bag look like an expensive accessory rather than a medical necessity.
With their most recent disco collection, I knew I had to go for it. I had avoided placing an order as they ship from Canada and I normally like to keep the air miles low if I can, but I just couldn’t pass up the disco bag.
The bags are designed to slip on over your stoma bag once it’s securely in place, and with a discrete bottom opening, it’s easy to comfortably empty without taking the whole thing off. Once I confirmed my size with them on instagram messenger, I put the order in for my disco bag and a violet satin bag cover.
First thoughts
You can tell they care about presentation, the bags came in a sophisticated see-through ziplock pouch (perfect to store them in longer term). My first impression of the purple satin bag was how soft it was, and I threw it on straight away.
This does make my stoma bag feel luxurious, honestly. Against my skin this stoma bag cover is so soft, I began wearing it to work, where it’s never on show, to sleep and directly out of the shower (when the bag is in the awkward stage of towel-dry but not fully dry).
Then, next I tried on the show stopper. My disco bag. Wow. The light catching, throwing light around the room like I was a true disco ball. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. The side against my skin was also just as soft as the purple satin and the sequins didn’t scratch my skin at all.
The disco bag and the outfit
5 minutes before leaving for the party was the first time I saw the outfit come together. It would have been earlier but I spent all of an hour and a half on my hair and makeup, which also had to match the sparkles from the bag.
I put threads of silver tinsel in my festival-style updo and stuck little gems around my eyes to complement the disco bag cover.
A black bikini was the base of my outfit, of course with the disco bag sitting comfortably under the handmade black macrame skirt with tassels dangling to my knees. Then the neck piece I threw on and quickly cut into an upside-down V shape to finish the look (yes, 5 minutes before we left I was still making adjustments).
I slipped on some chunky sandals before taking a few pictures and jumping in the car. What do you think of the final outfit? I certainly slayed the day and won ‘People’s Award’ runner up because I was out there dancing all damn day (even solo at times), and didn’t care if anyone was watching. Call me an icon, I already know that I am.
Send this post to an ostomate friend looking for some party inspiration or for a little confidence boost when it comes to their bag!
