Goodbye Mollymook

After a 3 month stop at Mollymook to make our bank accounts a bit healthier, we’ve hit the road again! Here’s what we’ve been getting up to since our last day at work.

Ticking off the list

There were a few things we wanted to do before heading back north. We’d been told Pebbly beach was a must, so we drove down there, explored the area then spent a slow afternoon on the grass where the kangaroos began to emerge. Pebbly beach is known for its wildlife and panoramic views which I’d say delivered.

We even saw more than we expected of the kangaroo that day. It was almost as if we were on a David Attenborough show as we witnessed kangaroo coitus unfolding. I’ve now seen more kangaroo balls and dongers than I had ever anticipated. Did you know they mate all year round?

We had anticipated climbing up the local hike called Pigeon House, but alas, to absolutely no fault of our own, the weather did not permit. Oh well! We cooked lasagne at our friend’s house instead, what a shame!

Saying goodbye

The hardest part about leaving Mollymook were the goodbyes. We’d build up a community in and around Mollymook, with our friends, favourite coffee shops, favourite pies and favourite beaches. It was tough to say goodbye but Australia is a big place and there is a lot more to see.

Back on the road

From Mollymook to Sydney. Of course we couldn’t drive right by my best friend’s house. We spent the evening going for a dip and chatting, chilling over some red wine and music as the sun went down.

Sydney’s surprises

We had only planned for one night in Sydney, however the surf lesson I had booked for the following day had been cancelled due to dangerous conditions and rescheduled for a couple of days’ time. With my surf lesson cancelled we had time to catch up with a friend we’d met while in Mollymook.

What started as plans to get coffee together ended up as an invitation onto a yacht. It was a luxurious surprise being picked up on a little boat to hop onto this wooden yacht. For some context, our friend works on the yacht. We got a tour, ending in the roof which I, of course, jumped from into the water. We’d made arrangements to meet another friend in Sydney we’d met at Termeil Point campground before we settled at Mollymook. He joined us on the yacht for a bit before we left to get a ham and cheese croissant together.

Lucky us

We still weren’t sure whether we wanted to remain in Sydney until our decision was basically made up for us. We were invited back onto the yacht in the evening and of course we hopped straight on. The wind was rocking the boat and Ben was sliding about on his chair! No wonder the owners didn’t fancy using it that day, lucky for us! We spent the evening drinking wine and chatting until we were dropped back off at the beach.

The next day we explored more of Manly, including Cabbage tree bay which we adored on this sunny afternoon. The day after was finally time for my surf lesson (thanks to my previous work lot for the voucher!). You know how you get some good days and some bad days? Well, this was a bad surf day for me, but I did get a few nice waves and good tips on my technique.

Road tripping

I’m still recovering from a bit of a stressful drive yesterday when we decided to take a tourist route which ended up having about 20km of the road unsealed (dirt and a lot of rocks). Our poor tyres! Although we did get to see a great waterfall out of it, so we can’t complain too much (actually, yes we can). I think Australia may need to rethink some of its tourist routes, or at least re-lay them. I almost forgot! We saw our first Australian snake! Luckily we were in the safety of the car. Why did the snake cross the road? To stress me the flip out.

What’s next?

For Easter weekend we’ll be volunteering at Bluesfest in Byron Bay! We’re really excited to get to the area, meet lots of people, have a good time and see Jack Johnson! That’s it for now!
