Now we’ve left the city, I thought I’d reflect on our time with our highlights and lowlights of the three months spent there.
Brisbane highlights
Rainbow serpent light show
After deciding to spend an evening on the 50 cent ferry fares, watching the sunset, we realised there was a drone light show on that very evening, and we were just in time to get the right ferry before it started. So off we went to the light show which consisted of 400 drones depicting the tale of the rainbow serpent of brisbane.
This unexpected experience blew us away. A lovely evening full of awe and surprise.
Making friends
Of course, one of the best things about Brisbane was the friendships forged over the trauma of working in hospitality. We left with heavy hearts but also carrying hope to see our friends again!
Fairy bread
Yesssss, I finally tried this famous Aussie childhood treat! Daymn, what a treat it was. Definitely making this a tradition in England.
Learning to Barista
One of the random things I’ve been wanting to learn for a while, and I got the opportunity when the restaurant I worked in opened a pop-up cafe! I’d taught myself with a crappy coffee machine during covid, but it’s nothing like being at the machine with a heck tonne of coffee orders to go! I can feel, watch and listen to the milk, call me the milk whisperer. Thanks Chloe!!!
Hot shower on demand
Oh yeah baby. Stinky? There’s a shower. Sweaty? There’s a shower. Just fancy a rinse? A shower is RIGHT THERE, just through a door from the bedroom. No need to shower in your swimming costume. No need worry if showering in the nude is appropriate or not. No showing in flipflops.
Ahhhh, I’ll stop there or I’ll miss it too much already!
Brisbane at night
You can’t deny that Brisbane is a beautiful city at night. Bridges lighting up all different colours. Our favourite was seeing it from the Citycat, as you rounded the corner the highrises come into view. It is one to behold.
Supermoon rise at mount Coot-Tha over the city
Our friend at work insisted we go to mount Coot-Tha before we left Brisbane (thank you Kate!). We’re glad we did. A perfect view of the city. To top it off, that very evening was a supermoon, perfectly across the horizon. Ethereal, epic and elegant.
Bens Birthday
This one needs it’s own blog post! But we went to a virtual reality experience, became wizards and I (with a bit of Ben’s help) defeated a giant dragon and a dark entity. We spent the evening on a private gondola bobbing along Brisbane river.
Brisvegas lowlights
Ben walking out
Work D R A M A. If you haven’t heard, after a plethora of disappointing shortcomings, Ben took the last straw at work and walked out mid-shift. While I continued (somewhat reluctantly) for another two weeks. Sorry Ben but finances over solidarity.
Being told to f%$! off
Yeah this was the nail in the coffin that led up to the aforementioned walk out. Sorry Ben, finances over my pride!
My bike being stolen
Ugh, I can’t blame anyone but myself who left it locked up overnight in a very dodgy area.
My eye issues
Well you’ll all heard about this one (unless you haven’t)! It was a scary part of our life in Brisbane, and is still on the way to being resolved…
My movie star moment
If you’ve seen the intro of Sex in the City you know Carrie gets wet from a bus that’s advertising her column. WELL. Imagine THAT, but it’s ME and I become absolultely soaked to the BONE. It doesn’t end there. Not only the the initial spray shock me to my core and soak me, I scream. Fully scream as it’s happening. Then ANOTHER spray comes at me and I just scream again, until the water stops I stand there and scream. Utterly SHOCKED. I would have never of guessed that’s how I’d respond to this situation, but hey, who knows what we do in times of trouble.
